== History == The Guttmacher Institute was originally founded as the Center for Family Planning Program Development in 1968 by Dr. Alan Guttmacher, a former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The institute’s initial focus was on family planning and reproductive health research, and it was established as a response to the increasing demand for better data and evidence on family planning programs in the U.S. and globally. In 1977, the organization was renamed the Guttmacher Institute to honor Dr. Guttmacher’s contributions to reproductive health and family planning. Over time, the institute expanded its work to include research on sexual and reproductive health issues beyond family planning, including abortion, maternal health, adolescent health, and global reproductive health. Today, the Guttmacher Institute is one of the leading research and policy organizations in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
