== History == The Urban Institute was established in 1968 as part of President Johnson’s "Great Society" programs, which aimed to eliminate poverty and racial injustice in America. The idea for the institute was conceived to provide policymakers with rigorous, evidence-based research to inform decisions on urban and social policy issues. It was founded with the goal of improving the lives of individuals and communities in urban areas through the development of better public policies and strategies. Since its founding, the Urban Institute has become one of the leading think tanks in the United States, known for its comprehensive data analysis and objective, non-partisan policy research. Over time, its focus has expanded to include issues related to economic mobility, criminal justice reform, education, housing, health care, and social equity.
